Protest Against Animal Circus
Yesterday evening about four-hundred people have attended a protest against an Animal Circus which is being held at Blata l-Bajda. The Circus Animal Rights Coalition is a movement composed of different animal welfare organisations and NGOs which is pressuring the government to ban Animal Circuses in Malta. The coalition was first established in 2006.
Partly due to the coalition's pressure, the Education Department has, from this year issued an order to all public schools not to take children to animal circuses as this does not consist of an educational activity whatsoever. The Coalition states that animal circuses are abusing animals especially due to the fact that they are not born to do circus stunts and are thus tortured to be trained to do as such. They also endure hard times when being transported from one palce to another.
The local Circus Fantasy promoters have filed a libel suit against a TV-personality, Moira Delia and Education Authorities for claiming that animal circuses are cruelty to animals. This comes as a joke after Circus Fantasy, the circus which has come to Malta has been investigated by the Italian police for animal abuse and has also sequestrated some of its animals: http://www.repubblica.it/2006/b/sezioni/cronaca/circo/tigrilatina/tigril...
